The unknown author of the prayer. What a perfect Thanksgiving Prayer. Thank you for all your articles. I really enjoy reading them and have forward some to others.
I’m not Christian, but I do have a favorite Christian prayer, which the meme prayer is a play on: the prayer of St. Francis. I never heard this prayer growing up Catholic; I first learned of it through Eknath Easwaran’s book “Meditation.” Anyway, it’s beautiful prayer so I thought I’d share it here:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Thank you for this brilliant and painfully funny reframe. It’s so needed. I think many of us woke folks are often so astonished by the aggressive responses of others to genuine care, that we forget what their cynicism means about them and slink off into a corner. I know some young men who sling ‘virtue signalling’ and ‘woke’ around liberally at any sign of care. There’s no real rebuttal to be had because they’re not thinking about what they’re saying. They’re just parroting what they’ve heard on podcasts or from friends. Because they think that gives them safety in the group. So trying to mount any kind of rational argument is futile. It can’t land. It drives me crazy. And until now I’ve really not known how to respond. I’m not entirely sure that tossing ‘cruelty-signalling’ back at them will be effective or useful but you never know. Worth a try perhaps. 🤔
Thank you for this WOKE reminder, especially at this season of Harvesting our blessings. I look forward to your musings in anticipation, and leave reading with additional uplifting energy to disperse.
It’s so strange to need to write a defense of awareness, but thank you for doing it, and for sharing one of my favorite quotes from Rebecca Solnit. 🙏

I love every part of this post! Thank you for being such an unapologetic uplifter!

Thanks for reminding me of it, Rob!
Thanks so much. I feel some renewal from the read.
WOKE is an Acronym
WOKE is an Acronym
When Ordinary Kindness Evolves
WAKEUP, also an acronym,
When Activating Kindness Everyone Ultimately Prospers
Alternatively, some WAKEUP, and
When Against Kindness Everyone Ultimately Perishes
When Ordinary Kindness Extinguishes
WOKE is one way of being on a continuum of living and loving — evolution to extinction
To Evolve is to love backwards, inside out, just as it is spelled
Looking inside how you are be-longing to be
Want to Evolve?
Look inside for how WOKE you are and reflect upon how you want to WAKEUP,
Loving kindness, or extinguishing kindness

I wish the world could be kinder.
